This is such a sweetie now selling on vintageclothing.com.au. It looks great with or without crinoline which is underneath in the above photos as I love to show how it might have been once worn. The fabric is a quality, creamy, off-white Swiss cotton with rows of pulled thread work. Also love the diamante buttons down the front and on each sleeve. It is a good size with 28 inch (71cm) waist and 37 inch (94cm) bust.what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-74213573036390677732017-05-03T19:17:00.000-07:002017-05-03T19:17:27.534-07:00Divine vintage 40s silk velvet evening jacket

Just wished this beautiful vintage 40s jacket fitted me as it is so rich and luxurious. Not to mention velvet is on-trend at the moment.
The little rhinestone brooch is some sort of cute insect and the tiny rhinestones in the centre of the front buttons just add that touch of bling.

It is always fascinating to think about the history of these vintage clothes and who and where they were made. I love the fact that the address of the manufacturer Miller's Exclusive Smart Wear (57E. Randolph St., Chicago) is on the label. Sadly on Google it comes up as a high-rise bank now. I wonder how many other gorgeous creations came out of their business.what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-45779773530321788102017-04-28T18:28:00.002-07:002017-04-28T18:28:36.032-07:00Pretty in pink 1920s Hungarian embroidered dress

These gorgeous 1920s - 1930s cotton-voile Hungarian embroidered dresses are so rare now.
It is amazing how timeless the style is. Just love the smocked band around the hip area.
While talking to my friend about the first 60s-style boutique in Brisbane called Splendiferous recently I remembered another friend who bought her gorgeous wedding dress there. As I was the bridesmaid I remember well the day in 1971 when I went with her to buy it. The dress (pictured above) was long, white crepe with a shirred bodice and short sleeves ... so of the era and still looks fabulous especially with her gorgeous Marianne Faithfull style hat. Thank you for letting me use this photo.

We all loved Splendiferous in Albert Street, Brisbane opened in the late 60s by sisters Kris Stevens and Bodil Bossey. It was so popular and new for Brisbane with the funky styles, groovy sales assistants and music playing. The owners opened another boutique called Brazilia nearby in Queen Street.

If anyone has any memories of either of these boutiques or old photos wearing something they bought there would love to hear from you.what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-85278135532714281832015-04-25T21:53:00.001-07:002015-04-25T23:48:56.599-07:00New Arrival: divine Ceil Chapman vintage 1950s dress

I have recently added this magnificent vintage 1950s pink silk organza dress by Ceil Chapman for sale on my website vintageclothing.com.au It was such an exciting find.

Ceil
Chapman was an American fashion designer based in New York from the
1940s to the 1960s. With no formal training she rose to become one of
the top fashion designers in the US. She was not only a designer for the
likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor she also made her label
available to the public. Renown for her construction and draping techniques the new owner of this rare dress will not be disappointed. Just wished it fitted me.

A most remarkable exhibition, Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood, featuring costumes worn by many of Hollywood's most famous stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Grace Kelly and Fred Astair is on exclusively at the Museum of Brisbane until May 24, 2015. This wonderful exhibition is drawn from a private collection owned by Brisbane man Nicholas Inglis.

The exhibition of around 60 outfits is beautifully displayed with the movies they were worn in playing in the background.

Talented textile restorer, Tess Evans, now based in Sydney was responsible for the incredible restoration of most of these gowns. Hundreds of hours were spent on the collection with a wonderful outcome.
The story of the restoration, From Creation to Restoration, which I attended was utterly fascinating.
Have just been to see Dior and I for the second time. Such a wonderful glimpse into the world of couture fashion. It is Raf Simon's first show as the new designer for iconic Parisian brand Christian Dior and he only has eight weeks to put it together. The talented women and men who work behind the scenes are a dedicated team who I found to be the main interest in this insightful film/doco. Great footage of Mr Christian Dior and some of his early creations too.what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-13806849799519178862013-11-24T18:06:00.002-08:002013-11-24T18:10:09.178-08:00On the subject of vintage Little Black Dresses

Vintage 50s at its best. Original black and silver halter-neck, backless wiggle dress. The quality striped fabric is textured and has a slight sheen. Just add a fabulous black hat or fascinator. I am a bit partial to the bigger brimmed hats for that knockout look. I always think a vintage wedding dress is a great idea to make a statement on your big day. Also so much cheaper than something you'd find in the shops. Just stumbled across a wonderful article by Mitchell Oakley Smith in The Australian online, April 1, 2011 on the meaning of haute couture and the impact it had on Australian fashion from the 1920s.
Here is an excerpt from it below.
For the full story go to
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/features/made-just-for-you/story-e6frg8io-1226030727464

As Riley (a dress historian at the State Library of NSW) says: “Dressmaking and fashion are portable trades,
and with the great waves of migration around the world over the past
century, if someone had skill in a certain area, it was embraced no
matter where they were.” And Australia is no exception, particularly
with the influx of European migrants in the 1950s that saw a boom in
dressmaking. Along with European food and culture came couture, or at
least a version of it.
During the 20th century, workers and
dressmakers came to Australia and set up fashion businesses, with
fabrics and patterns brought from Europe. Two women, Paulette Pellier
and Germaine Rocher, are widely noted as integral to establishing a
couture industry in Australia. Pellier, previously a Paris-based
dressmaker, migrated to Australia during World War I and set up her own
studio in Sydney offering pin-tucked, hand-embroidered blouses, which
she also sold out of a Brisbane hotel room through the 1920s in a
similar format to French houses’ salon shows. The 1930s saw Rocher and
her husband escape Bolshevik Russia and arrive in Sydney with two French
seamstresses, with whom she created a workroom in the elegant St James
Trust Building. Rocher travelled to Paris every year where “she had
relationships with the couturiers and was friendly with Balenciaga,”
says Riley. “She was very stylish and was noted for the beautiful
clothing she offered.”
Jones believes Australians suffered
something of a cultural cringe as a result of the great distance between
them and Europe. This was to be a contributing factor in our love of
magazines, seen as a connection to the rest of the world. In 1946, the Australian Women’s Weekly sent
its fashion editor, Mary Ursula Hordern, to Paris to report on the
haute couture collections. There, she put together a collection of over
100 pieces for a Sydney-based fashion show and, while Australians
couldn’t purchase from the collection, it stimulated fervent shopping
and kick-started Australia’s garment industry following the war’s
depression.
“It really hit a nerve with Australians, seeing the
whole package: haute couture on French models,” says Riley, explaining
the sheer saturation it achieved as a newsreel of the show was screened
in every Australian cinema. So successful was it that European houses
began to identify Australia as a viable market for their goods and so
licensing agreements were established between the likes of Christian
Dior and department store David Jones. Pierre Balmain, another famous
French couturier, visited Australia in 1947, creating a collection
exclusively for David Jones. A decade later, rival store Myer brought
the first all-Dior fashion parade to Australia, making the French
couturier a household name.
However, as Katie Somerville, curator
of Australian fashion and textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria,
points out, Australian fashion hasn’t always been about what was made
overseas. “Labels and dressmakers developed in their own right and were
very much a product of Australia,” she says, noting the cascade effect
of French haute couture that inspired many Australian fashion houses to
offer a couture service. Jones agrees with Somerville, noting the likes
of Chris Jacovides, Hall Ludlow and Beril Jents as key initiators in
Australia establishing its own identity for couture. Jents had
originally visited the fashion shows in Paris in the 1940s, having been
asked to copy the patterns for the local market, but later set up her
own studio and began creating clothes under her own name.
“There were some very wealthy women who wanted to look good for the ball season’s social scene,” says
Jones.
“They loved fashion and getting dressed up.” Of course, much of the
high glamour subsided with the informality of the 1960s but couture
remained an integral part of the Australian fashion industry.

This original 1950s, pure wool, 2 pce outfit carries the David Jones label.
It was given to me by a dear friend whose stylish mother originally owned it.
I have listed it for sale on my website vintageclothing.com.au and hope it goes to a good home.
I have just listed another classic little black dress by one of my favourite vintage brands Carlye. They were such a quality brand. It has alternating rows of inset lace and half-moon-shaped pintucking. I just love the double box-pleated skirt too. The belt isn't original and is not that old but is included. I think the gold trim sets it off. When I spotted the top three delightful photos by the lovely Carla Coulson taken at the Tuileries Garden in Paris recently I was reminded of a dress I have listed on vintageclothing.com.au

Pink gingham is so perfect for spring don't you think. Mine originates from the sixties, has never been worn and still has swing tags attached. Such a rare gem.

I highly recommend having a look at Carla's website and blog. Not only is she an acclaimed photographer who originates from Australia and now lives in Paris with her Italian husband but she is also a published author who has written four very readable books. On top of all this she is a thoroughly nice person.what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-67958306094665011332012-07-31T22:28:00.002-07:002012-07-31T22:42:31.784-07:00New arrival ... ideal for spring wedding

I have just listed this gorgeous 1950s dress in mocha coloured lace and silk organza. The flower is original and just sets it off. So feminine and pretty, would make a divine spring wedding dress.

Saw this old movie made in 1958 called Bonjour Tristesse advertised recently and decided to record it. The cast included David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Jean Seaberg and Juliette Greco.

When the opening credits started I was thrilled to see the clothes were by Givenchy, accessories by Hermes and jewellery by Cartier. What a line-up of fashion elite.

It certainly didn't disappoint from a fashion, story and location viewpoint.
Sorry I have taken so long to post but hope these fab new arrivals will inspire my readers. I particularly love the vintage 70s garments by Australian designers Norma Tullo (tweed jacket with velvet collar and trim) and Merco Davron (black and silver long dress).what are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-69453416933513206252012-03-22T02:57:00.006-07:002012-03-22T03:04:07.668-07:00The perfect 'little black dress' has arrived

I've just listed this divine vintage 1950s LBD on vintageclothing.com.au
It's by Saba Jnr of California and is in lace and chiffon with nude acetate satin lining. So sad it doesn't fit me as I would be wearing this one in the cooler months. For anyone interested it is approximately an Australian size 10 and is in a tan and black wool or wool blend fabric. It was by Joyce Stewart from Jesire (sadly now in liquidation) who sold to high street stores.
As soon as I saw it I was reminded of a genuine vintage 50s dress I sold at vintageclothing.com.au
Have a look at the last 2 photos to see the similarity. It's quite amazing really.

For more great photos and details about Duchess Kate and what she is up to go to hrduchesskate.blogspot.com.auwhat are they wearing nowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546155360301370708noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6245947555520621245.post-36832789405497954672011-12-19T14:12:00.000-08:002011-12-19T14:25:31.256-08:0050s style and eleganceI just love everything about this image taken in 1956. The clothes by various designers including one of my favourites, Mr Mort, are divine and the composition and styling are incredible.
